THE HISTORY AND HERITAGE OF COUNTY CORK
Cork City Gaol, located 2km north west of Patrick Street, is suitable for all ages and nationalities (tours in 8 languages).
Visitors having first presented themselves to the Governor, wander through cell wings furnished with life-sized wax figures, each representing a particular period in Irish history from pre-famine times to the foundation of the State. Original graffiti on cell walls tell the innermost feelings of some inmates, while a spectacular sound and image presentation tells the social history and contrasting lifestyles of 19th century Cork, and why some people turned to crime.
The Radio Museum Experience, uniquely situated in the former Governor’s house is now also open. This separate attraction moves visitors through wavelengths of time to meet Marconi, whose name is synonymous with radio and to view the Museum Collection, and visit the restored 1920s 6CK Radio Broadcasting Studio.
